"On A Roll: Contemporary Interpretations of the Paper Scroll". Ipswich Community Gallery, 2025, then selected highlights displayed at Caboolture Regional Gallery 2025.
We are so pleased to share with you, a visual record of the work of artists from Papermakers and Artists Queensland (PAQ) in our Members’ Exhibition for 2025. Our thanks go to all who have participated and enabled it to happen at the Ipswich Community Gallery.
The exhibition illustrated the diversity and range of PAQ’s membership. While many art shows have a definite theme or concept for artists to explore, our members were asked to work within the traditional scroll format, yet given full freedom to follow their creative instincts.

"Paper: All Stitched Up" - John Mullins Memorial Gallery, Dogwood Crossing, 2023
'Paper: All Stitched Up' is a contemporary view of papermaking and paper art by members of Papermakers and Artists
Qld (PAQ), showcasing the experience and diversity of each artist's practice. The exhibition focuses on works on paper
where stitching is an integral element of the visual design and includes sculptural works and artist books.
To stitch is to join together, to mend, or fasten. To stitch is to bring together paper, the mind, distance, or cultural
divides. Stitching can be an act of healing, hope, practicality, creativity, and revolution. Perforations in paper after
stitches have been removed may represent wounds of the body, memories, or loss.
Papermakers and Artists Qld (PAQ) was formed in 1993 by a group of like-minded artists, adopting a philosophy of
fostering the interests of paper artists through exploring and sharing.
37 works by 23 PAQ artists were selected for this exhibition to showcase the variety of paper art and techniques, and
include hangings, sculptures, objects and artist books. Although stitching on paper is the focus of this exhibition, other techniques employed by the artists include painting,
dyeing, rusting, collage, printmaking, and calligraphy.
Some members of PAQ specialise in making paper from locally sourced plant material, often harvesting nuisance
species or those in abundance. The plant fibres are broken down in a long process starting with collection of plant
material, then boiling and beating, resulting in a fibrous paper pulp. The pulp can be couched into sheets using mould
and deckle equipment, poured onto a surface or applied directly onto moulds to form 3-dimensional shapes.
The resulting art works as shown in ‘Paper: All Stitched Up’ demonstrate the remarkable diversity of the medium of
paper, its strength often at odds with its apparent fragility.

SKY, SEA, LANDLINES. Richard Randall Art Studio Mt Coot-tha August 6-10th 2021
As curators of SKY, SEA, LAND LINES , we wish to thank the participating members of the Papermakers and Artists for their time and creativity to provide and to talk about their works. This is an exhibition presenting an eclectic array of creations where paper and/or book is paramount for a group of contemporary artists.
The exhibition title allowed for a wide and varied interruption of subject matter and for those taking part the challenge was to refine the theme and draw upon moments which have been etched into the mind: moments stimulated by nature, enlivened by one’s imagination and held together by the theme,, before being used to tell a story in, on, or with, the medium of paper.
These works are not all artists’ books. The final product reflects the artistic vision of one person, without imposed constraints connected to marketing, censorship or a perceived conception of a book. For the artists, paper was a tool, a common thread for all of them, to explore and communicate their ideas and experiences in a very individual way. This exhibition evidences the endless potential of the medium, sometimes unexpected or controversial, making a diverse
collection, but always thought provoking. It is a rare pleasure and a unique experience for the public to see art work where the medium of paper extends beyond its
character as a substrate to becoming an essential ingredient in the portrayal of the concept of lines in our environment.

The "25" Matchbox Project
In 2018, PAQ members were given the brief of “my concept of a mini Art Exhibition using artists books in a matchbox for our 25th anniversary… The ‘25’ Matchbox Project.
I see it as 25 boxes with 25 pages face up…with 25 approaches to Paper Play Art…”
20 members responded with five people submitting 2 works so the 25 boxes were achieved. As Ngaire listed on her Matchbox cover, many of the techniques she explored are fleetingly glimpsed in tiny pages by all.
Worked, commercial papers vie with multiple varieties of handmade papers of all textures and colours. The Artist Book format wasn’t dictated but, in the end, nearly all members stayed with the ‘concertina’ structure although there are portrait and landscape presentations. I believe they do clearly envision ‘Paper Play’.
