Berbagi
Sunshine Coast University Gallery
3 February to 3 March 2012
Curator - Di Tait
‘Berbagi’ is the Balinese word for ‘share’, which sums up the spirit behind this exhibition.
In June 2010 ten members of Papermakers of Queensland travelled to Ubud to meet up with a member of their group who lives in Bali. Lynne Fellowes has a long history of association with Papermakers of Queensland having been Secretary for some years before she and her husband moved to make their home in Indonesia. Lynne welcomed ten of her fellow members of POQ to her new studio in Bali, to share with her the culture of her new home and then to meet and be inspired by the Balinese artists and papermakers she has met there in the past few years.
It sometimes takes travelling out of one’s normality to inspire and bring a different perspective to the work of artists. Whilst in Darwin and Bali the POQ travellers were inspired by Balinese culture and environment, visits to artist’s studios, and workshops with local artists. It is the response to this interchange of ideas, techniques, cultures, and the sharing of the common bonds, particularly the bonds between artists, that formed the substance of this exhibition.
The exhibition featured the work of the ten members of POQ who travelled from Australia to Bali, their hostess and 2 inspired local artists who have since joined the ranks of POQ's membership. All of the works were primarily paper based and included two and three dimensional pieces, large and small works, collaborations, and journals, and images from the trip.
The POQ artists who participated were: Helga Hill, Glenda Hennig, Jill de Hayr, Ngaire Macleod, Jill Brose, Tricia Smout, Joolie Gibb, Joanna Faber, Judy Barrass, Di Tait, ynne Fellowes and 2 international artists from Bali - Narause Kiyoshi and Joseph Borde.
